What is Butrint?

Butrint is an archaeological site located in the south of Albania, near the town of Sarandë. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. The site dates back to the Hellenistic period and has been occupied by various civilisations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians. It is known for its well-preserved ruins, including a theater, a Roman bathhouse, and a fortress. Visiting Butrint allows tourists to step back in time and explore the rich history and culture of the region.

Butrint is close to Sarandë and Ksamil. if you are located in Sarandë this is how to travel to Butrint:

How to travel from Sarandë to Butrint by bus

One of the most commonly suggested ways to access the public transport system is through the central bus station. Located in between the Friendship Park and the Old Synagoge, the central bus station serves as a hub for various bus routes, catering to different destinations within the city and its surroundings. By taking a bus from the central bus station, you can conveniently reach your desired location while enjoying the benefits of reduced carbon emissions.

In Sarandë, the public transport system offers an affordable and eco-friendly way for both locals and visitors to navigate the city. With a fare of approximately 200 LEK per person, utilising the public transport system not only reduces individual carbon emissions but also contributes to less traffic congestion, making it an ideal option for the environmentally conscious. Because it's very affordable, be prepared that the buses can be extremely full! Especially if you get in from the central busstation. My advise would be to go to the port of Sarandë, go up to the roundabout. There, take the bus to Butrint. It's the same bus that goes to the central bus 'station' area but chances are big that the bus will be too full if you get in from the Friendship park / Synagoge street.

The this bus also stops in Ksamil so you can combine Butrint and Ksamil in one trip. The day BEFORE you go, go to the bus stops to check the times. The busses to Butrint in the high season usually depart 1x every 30 minutes but double check it because schedules can change.

Travel Time: The journey typically takes around 30-75 minutes, depending on traffic.

Departure Point: The main bus station between Friendship Park and the Synagoge. OR get in earlier from the roundabout near the port of Sarandë. This roundabout doesn't have clear signs of bus stops but people do get in and out from here.

Advise: Take the bus if it's not crowded it's a very good price. But in the high season the bus can get too full, then it would be more convenient to consider other types of transport.

How to travel from Sarandë to Butrint by Private Taxi

If you prefer a more personalised experience or have a group of travellers, hiring a private taxi might be a suitable choice. This is definitely much more convenient than the bus. Here's what you need to know:

Price: The price for a one-way trip ranges from €15 to €25 per passenger, depending on the number of passengers. If you ask a taxi driver in the city center they'll charge €50 per ride, no matter if you are with 2, 3, or 4 people. It's because right in the center, the traffic jam is worse near the bus station. I would advise to walk a bit further, pass through the traffic jam and see if you can get a taxi there and negotiate a good price. We found a taxi driver there willing to take us from Sarandë to Butrint for €30.

The taxi driver will ask if it's one-way or return ride. The return ride from Butrint to Sarandë is much easier as many people also spend time in Ksamil. The price for a one-way bus ticket is 200 LEK per person and it takes about 30 minutes. Also the bus departs 1x every 30 minutes in the high season or 1x every hour. The bus stop is very easy to find in Butrint.

Travel Time: The journey typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Departure Point: You can easily find taxis near Saranda port or arrange for a pick-up from your hotel.

Advise: Negotiate the price with the taxi driver before getting in to ensure a fair deal.

A scooter is much easier but you need to be an experienced scooter driver. The way from Sarandë to Butrint is not a flat right route, but it takes you to some hills with sharp turns.
